Amala Akkineni is an Indian film actress, who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films.
Biography
Amala was born in West Bengal to an Irish mother and Bengali father. Her maiden name was Amala Mukherjee. She has an elder brother and sister. She is married to Telugu movie actor Nagarjuna. She is also one of the prominent animal rights activists of India. She was educated in Kalakshetra, Madras in classical Dance.
Career
Amala made her debut in a Tamil film titled Mythili Yennai Kadali directed by T. Rajendar, which was a big box office hit. She has also starred in many Tollywood movies and few Bollywood movies. Apart from Tamil and Telugu she also acted in few Malayalam and Kannada films.
Winning overnight fame in a Tamil film by famous director T. Rajendar, she charmed cinegoers in a flurry of fifty films. She acted in a number of Tamil and Telugu movies. Her performance in Pushpak, Agninakshtram (Gharshana) are unforgettable. She acted with Telugu superstar Nagarjuna (Nagarjuna Akkineni) in hits like Nirnayam and Shiva. The movie Shiva was a mega blockbuster and brought her wide fame and recognition. She acted with iconic actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Prabhu, Mohan in Tamil, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi in Malayalam and Nagarjuna and Chiranjeevi in Telugu among several others. She worked with veteran directors like Bharathiraja, Maniratnam and Ram Gopal Verma.
Personal life
Amala fell in love with Telugu actor Nagarjuna whom she married in 1992 and quit films after marriage. Their son Akhil (born in 1994) acted as the baby in a Telugu movie Sisindri which was made on the lines of Hollywood flick Baby's Day Out and was also remade in Tamil as Chutti Kulandai. Akhil now studies in Oakridge International School in Hyderabad where he now stays along with his parents.
Amala is famous as the founder of 'Blue Cross of Hyderabad' a non-government organization (NGO) in Hyderabad, India, which works towards the welfare of animals and preservation of animal rights. She is a practicing vegetarian and does not drink alcohol. She also teaches Yoga for women, and actively promotes communal harmony.
